HOW IT WORKS
Most people who come to me for stop-smoking hypnotherapy are motivated and have already tried several times to quit. They may have used willpower, nicotine patches or other aids, only to discover how deeply rooted the habit has become. The reason is simple. Smoking is not driven by conscious intention. It is held in the subconscious mind, and it is difficult to change a subconscious pattern through conscious effort alone. This is where hypnotherapy is particularly effective.
Hypnosis is a natural state of enhanced receptivity to ideas and positive change. In this state you can more clearly recognise the impact smoking is having on your health and wellbeing, and connect with your motivation to become a healthy non-smoker. Hypnotherapy strengthens your reasons for stopping, updates the subconscious patterns that keep the habit alive and supports a shift in identity from smoker to non-smoker.
It is not magic. Your own motivation and participation remain essential.
Over nearly thirty years, I have helped many thousands of people quit, including those smoking heavily. My work is practical, individual and focused on long term freedom from the habit.
Who can be helped
Broadly speaking, there are two types of smokers.
1. Habit Smokers
These are people who began smoking at some point and the subconscious mind automated it into a routine. The habit becomes tied to times of day, activities and emotional cues. Habit smokers can often stop in a single two-hour session, and though no therapist can guarantee results, I do have a high success rate.
2. Compulsive Smokers
Here smoking functions as a way of coping with anxiety, low mood, stress, unresolved trauma or similar difficulties. This pattern requires a different approach. We first explore and work with the underlying drivers of the behaviour. This usually takes several sessions, though some highly motivated clients can still stop in a single extended session if they wish to try that first.
Regardless of type, successful change depends on having your own strong reasons to stop, rather than doing it to please someone else. Common motivations include:
• Health concerns or existing symptoms
• Wanting to prevent future illness
• Financial reasons
• Increasing social pressure
• Caring about appearance and skin health
• Wanting to feel clean and smell fresh
• Feeling that smoking no longer aligns with who you are

What happens in a session?
The first part of the session focuses on understanding your smoking pattern and clarifying your motivations. This sets the foundation for effective work.
The second part is a tailor-made hypnotherapy session. You simply close your eyes and allow yourself to be guided into hypnosis. Almost everyone can reach a level of hypnosis sufficient for the therapeutic suggestions to take effect. During the session you visualise certain scenes, connect with your reasons for change and receive suggestions that support you in becoming a non-smoker. At a key point I will invite you to make a clear commitment to lifelong non-smoking and will create an anchor to reinforce that decision. We also work on stress reduction and alternative responses to triggers.
As a clinical hypnotherapist with decades of experience, I tailor every stop-smoking session to the individual. I work in person only, from my home practice in Tullamore, Co Offaly, and the session lasts roughly two hours.
